Function of HRM

 To achieve the objectives of HR, there are set of functions to be carried out.

HR functions refer to tasks to be performed in an organization to provide and co ordinate human resources. These set of functions are called HR Process

Human Resources management is a process of effective and efficient utilization of human resources in order to achieve goals of an organization.

The policies and practices involved in carrying out the " people" or human resource aspects of a management position, including recruiting, training, rewarding and appraising.


“HRM is a distinctive approach to employment management which seeks to achieve competitive advantage through the strategic deployment of a highly committed and capable workforce, using an array of cultural, structural and personnel techniques. Storey (1995: 5).
 
“HRM is a managerial perspective which argues the need to establish an integrated series of personnel policies to support organizational strategy.” Buchanan and Huczynski (2004: 679). 

 “HRM is a strategic approach to managing employment relations which emphasizes that leveraging people’s capabilities is critical to achieving competitive advantage, this being achieved through a distinctive set of integrated employment policies, programmes and practices.” Bratton and Gold (2007: 7).

 What is  HRM ?

  • It deals with the people aspect of an organization
  • It is a term used to describe the set of tasks aimed at effectively managing an organization's employees or human resources
Human Resource Management  is a way of management that links people related activities to the strategy of business or organization. HRM is often referred to as " STRATEGIC HRM "

HRM is a relatively new approach to managing people in any organization. People are considered the key resource in the approach. It is concerned with the people dimension in management of an organization. Since an organization is a body of people, their acquisition, development of skills, motivation for higher levels of attainments, as well as ensuring maintenance of their level of commitment are all significant activities.

Human Resource Management is a process, which consist of four main activities.
  1. Acquisition
  2. Development
  3. Motivation
  4. Maintenance  

  Characteristics of Human Resource

  • Live and active
  • Reactive
  • Ability to feel and think
  • Ability to influence to decide its cost
  • value increases with the time, training, experience and knowledge.
  • Personality - his/her own psychological frame work.
  • ability to organize into team,unions, etc
  • Make decision on all other resources.
  • Creative/ innovative

Functions of the HR manager

  • Line function

The HR manager directs the actives of the people in his or her own department and in related service areas.
  • Coordinate function 

HR managers also coordinate personnel activities.
  • Staff ( assist and advice) functions

Assisting  and advising line manager is the heart of the HR manager's job.
